A guide to identification of Sundews native to Victoria

 

 

 

Drosera indica

Roots fibrous, leaves to 10 cm long, scattered on stem, 3 - 25 flowers which may be pink, orange or white. Stem up to 50 cm with soft down on stem. Stalk of flower up to 15 cm long.Found in Victoria in the Mallee. Grows in damp herb fields and along stream banks, usually in sand. Sometimes confused with Byblis liniflora, which has solitary flowers.

 

Drosera binata

Roots thick, stem very short, leaves forked once or twice, lobes 2 - 10 cm long. When young, lobes are rolled up. Flowers are white. Found in wet sand and sandy peat in swamps, on creek banks and rock ledges. Can flower all year, but mainly early Summer.

Drosera spathulata

Roots fibrous, stem very short, leaves crowded in a flat rosette. Several (up to 10 or more) flowers per stem, which are white or pink. Each flower is attached by a short stalk equally spaced along a central stem. Found in wetlands and heaths. Flowers during Summer.

Drosera peltata

Roots tuberous. Stem erect, 6 to 50 cm long. Leaves in a flat rosette. Leaves on the stem are attached alternate. 5 to 10 flowers which are on uppermost stems, white in colour. Found in all areas. Flowers mid Winter to early Spring. 

Drosera auriculata

Roots tuberous. Stem erect, 15 to 70 cm long. Lowest leaves in a flat rosette, 3 to 10 cm long. Leaves on the stem are attached alternate or in clusters. 2 to 8 flowers which are white of pink. Widespread in South East Australia. Flowers mid Winter to late Spring.

Drosera whittakeri

Roots tuberous. Leaves in a flat rosette, spathulate in shape. 1 white flower per stalk, and can have many flower stalks. Occurs mostly in Victoria. Flowers mid Winter to mid Spring.

Drosera arcturi

Fibrous roots. Underground stem usually short, up to 10 cm long. Leaves in a convex rosette. 1 flower, white in colour. Occurs in eastern Victoria, usually in sub-alpine areas. Grows in heaths and bogs. Flowers mid Summer.

Drosera glanduligera

Fibrous roots. Stem very short. Leaves in a convex rosette. 1 to 4 flowers, which are orange to red in colour. Is widespread throughout Victoria. Flowers late Winter to late Spring.

Drosera pygmaea

Fibrous roots. Stem very short. Leaves in a convex rosette. 1 flower (white) per stalk, and can have many flower stalks. Is widespread throughout Victoria. Flowers early Spring to mid Summer.
